It’s the age-old question: what’s a better way to catch the latest flick: home theaters or movie theaters? While there have been endless debates on this, recent events surrounding the pandemic leave many rethinking this question. According to a Gallup poll (hyperlink: https://news.gallup.com/poll/388538/movie-theater-attendance-far-below-historical-norms.aspx?utm_source=alert&utm_medium=email&utm_content=morelink&utm_campaign=syndication) on the topic last year, 62% of Americans didn't step foot in a movie theater at all in the previous 12 months, compared to 32% of people in 2007. When asked how many movies they've attended in the past 12 months, the average people gave in 2021 was only 1.4 movies (compared to 4.8 movies in 2007).
This is the opposite of what's been happening in home streaming services: throughout the pandemic, many movie-lovers flocked to streaming services to fill the void. According to Forbes (hyperlink: https://www.forbes.com/sites/forrester/2021/06/28/post-pandemic-media-consumption-online-streaming-accelerates-a-new-content-experience/?sh=1ec45a2918cf), 39% of US consumers liked the idea of seeing newly released movies on streaming services in mid-2020, and 34% reported planning to continue even after the pandemic lifts.
Is this true? Now that theaters are starting to recover, let's compare the two main ways movie-lovers enjoy the cinema:
So even though everyone has experienced the benefits of staying in, I predict that theaters will reclaim their throne as the pandemic starts to end.
By the way, I still enjoy catching movies at home in between going to theaters.
Have you returned to the movie theater or have you made the the switch? Let us know in the comments below!
